겹오가리
겹오가리는 겹단지라고도 불리며, 입과 어깨 사이에 띠가 둘러진 옹기이다.
냉장고가 없던 시절 음식을 시원하게 보관하기 위해 만들어졌으며, 입과 띠 사이의 오목한 둘레에 물을 채워 단지 윗부분을 차갑게 유지하도록 설계되었다.
오목한 둘레 양쪽에 뚫린 작은 구멍을 통해 미지근해진 물을 빼고 다시 찬물을 부어 식혜나 김치를 시원하게 보관하였다.
띠 아래쪽에도 작은 구멍이 있어 물을 쉽게 교체할 수 있었다.
입구 주변에 고인 물은 벌레가 음식 속으로 들어가는 것을 막는 역할을 하였다.
이러한 겹오가리의 구조에서 선조들의 생활 지혜를 엿볼 수 있다.
Gyeop-ogari (Layered Food Jar)
The gyeop-ogari, also known as a layered jar, is an earthenware container with a band around the neck and shoulder.
Before refrigerators existed, it was designed to keep food cool by filling water in the recessed area between the mouth and the band, chilling the top of the jar.
Small holes on both sides of this recessed area allowed lukewarm water to be drained and replaced with cold water, keeping contents such as sikhye (sweet rice drink) or kimchi cool.
Another small hole below the band made it easy to replace the water.
The water collected around the jar’s mouth also prevented insects from entering the food.
The design of the gyeop-ogari reflects the practical ingenuity of ancestors in food preservation.
