Seongju-danji (Household Guardian Jar)
In Korea, folk beliefs rooted in an agrarian culture are deeply embedded in daily life.
Our ancestors believed that each corner of the house was protected by its own guardian deity, and among these, Seongju-shin—the household god who governs the family’s fortune and misfortune—was regarded as the most important.
Each year, the first harvested grains were placed in the Seongju-danji, tied above the main beam of the hall, or kept in the master bedroom.
It was believed that if the rice stored in the Seongju-danji spoiled or was infested with insects, misfortune would follow. Therefore, the rice was stored in breathable onggi jars to prevent infestation.
Additionally, the god guarding the storage room was Eopshin (Eop-danji), and the deity protecting the kitchen was Jowang-shin (Jowang-danji).
