홍도 빗물 항아리
홍도는 전라남도 신안군 흑산면에 있는 섬으로, 해가 질 무렵 섬 전체가 붉게 물든다고 하여 ‘홍도’라 불리게 되었다.
사면이 바다로 둘러싸인 홍도는 1960년대까지 기계 문명과는 거리가 먼 지역으로, 빗물을 모아 식수로 저장해 사용하였다.
이때 사용된 홍도 빗물 항아리는 많은 양의 빗물을 받을 수 있도록 입이 넓고 바닥이 좁으며, 빗살무늬토기와 비슷한 형태를 갖추고 있다.
바닥이 좁아 불안해 보이는 항아리는 아랫부분을 땅에 묻어 빗물을 저장하고, 필요할 때마다 우물처럼 사용하였다.
Hongdo Rainwater Jar
Hongdo is an island in Heuksan-myeon, Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, named because the entire island appears red at sunset.
Surrounded by the sea on all sides, Hongdo remained largely untouched by modern machinery until the 1960s. Rainwater was collected and stored as drinking water.
The Hongdo rainwater jar used for this purpose has a wide opening to collect large amounts of rain, a narrow base, and a shape similar to bit-sal patterned pottery.
Because the narrow base could seem unstable, the jars were partially buried in the ground to store rainwater and used like wells whenever needed.
