허벅
허벅은 제주도만의 독특한 물동이 형태이다. 대나무로 만든 구덕에 물을 담아 이동할 때 사용되었다.
허벅의 입구는 몸체에 비해 매우 좁아 주먹이 겨우 들어갈 정도로 제작되었는데, 이는 이동 중 물이 쏟아지는 것을 방지하고 손잡이 역할도 하도록 한 것이다.
매일 길러온 물은 부엌 한쪽에 있는 물두멍에 저장하였으며, 옹기에 담긴 물은 정화 작용 덕분에 깨끗한 식수로 사용할 수 있었다.
Heobeok (Jeju Water Jar)
Heobeok is a unique water jar from Jeju Island. Water was carried in a bamboo container called gudeok and transported using this jar.
Unlike water jars used on the mainland, the Heobeok has a very narrow opening, just wide enough to fit a fist, which helps prevent spills during transport and serves as a handle.
The daily collected water was stored in a mul-dumeong (water trough) in the kitchen, and water kept in the jar could be used as clean drinking water thanks to its natural purification properties.
